Before Meaning Becomes Purpose
I save things I don't want to forget.
A sentence from a book. A screenshot of something someone said. A thought that comes to me while I'm driving. A conversation I want to return to later because something about it is still working on me. An idea I don't understand yet but know well enough not to let disappear.
Sometimes I know immediately why something matters to me. More often, I just know that it does.
So I keep it. I write it down. I take the picture. I bring it into a conversation and turn it around for a while. I ask questions about it. I follow whatever it seems connected to. I give myself somewhere to put the things that aren't finished with me yet.
I think a lot of us do this in our own ways. We keep the text message. We underline the sentence. We save the article we want to come back to. We hear someone say something that stays with us long after the conversation has ended. Something in us recognizes significance before we understand what it means.
I've always loved that moment of recognition.
I've also started noticing how quickly I ask it to become something else.
Once I've saved the thought, I want to understand it. Once I understand it, I want to integrate it. If I've learned something, I wonder how I might use it. If something changes me, I wonder what I'm supposed to do with what I've learned.
Without really meaning to, I can turn being moved into an assignment.
This has given me a lot. Curiosity has taken me into some of the most meaningful parts of my life. I've changed careers because I followed something that kept tugging at me. I've learned practices because something in my own experience made me want to understand more. I've written because something I was living wouldn't leave me alone until I found language for it.
There are things I first saved because I didn't want to forget them that eventually changed the direction of my life. I don't want to become less curious about those things. I don't want to stop following threads or asking questions or noticing when something seems to be asking for more of my attention.
I'm just beginning to notice that somewhere along the way, I started expecting something from almost everything that moved me.
Maybe it should teach me something. Maybe it should change something. Maybe it belongs in my work. Maybe there is a way I could share it with someone else. Maybe this experience is pointing toward whatever comes next.
It is a very small shift, from this matters to me to what am I supposed to do with this?
I'm not sure I noticed I was making it.
And lately another possibility has been occurring to me.
What if being moved is enough?
What if the song gets to make me cry in the car without my needing to understand why? What if I can hear someone's story and simply carry more tenderness for them afterward? What if I become fascinated by something and never become an expert in it? What if I read a book that changes me and let it change me without immediately deciding how I will apply what I've learned?
Even writing those questions, I can feel how unfamiliar some of them are.
I like integration. I like finding connections. I like the moment when something I've been carrying suddenly makes sense. And I love making things from what I discover. There is a particular kind of joy in finding language for something I have lived and realizing it might help another person recognize something in herself.
I don't want to lose any of that.
I just don't want making something to be the requirement for having been moved.
A phrase came to me recently that I've been carrying around:
I allow meaning to exist before purpose.
At first, I thought the important part was purpose. Maybe I needed to wait longer before deciding what an experience was for. Give it time to settle. Let meaning emerge before turning it into action.
But I've become more interested in the word before.
Before doesn't promise that purpose is coming.
Something might become an essay. A curiosity might become a practice. An experience might eventually change something about the way I live. I may understand months from now why a particular conversation stayed with me.
And I may not.
There are probably things I have carried for years that have already shaped me in ways I couldn't name. Songs that opened something. People whose words stayed with me. Books I read at exactly the right moment. Experiences that softened me, unsettled me, delighted me, broke my heart a little, or reminded me of something I had forgotten.
Maybe their influence doesn't need to be measured by what I made from them.
Maybe receiving an experience can be more like receiving anything else. I can notice that something has reached me. I can let myself have it. I can appreciate what it stirred without immediately figuring out how to give something back.
I can be moved without turning it into a mission.
I suspect I'll still save the screenshot. I'll still photograph the page. I'll still write down the thought that comes to me while I'm driving and bring the unfinished ideas somewhere I can turn them around for a while. That's part of how I pay attention, and I like that about myself.
I'm just curious about what might happen if I leave a little more room between this matters to me and what am I going to do with it?
Maybe some things will still become something.
And maybe some things will simply become part of me.
A Gentle Invitation
As you move through the week ahead, I wonder...
What have you been carrying because it moved you, and what would it feel like to let that be enough for now?
